We he also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of graduali. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial just. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injust to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make just a reality for all of God's children.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of and equality. Nine sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. And those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will he a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of just emerges.

But there is soming that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of just: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forr conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.

The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, he come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. 在沃西完全康复之后的大学二年级赛季上, 他以场均14.2分, 8.4个篮板,50%的投射命中率成为ACC联盟的前锋。

NBA生涯

湖人队在1982年赢得了NBA总冠军， 当时他们的小前锋Jamaal Wilkes 也是当时联盟里的小前锋。 高瞻远瞩的湖人仍然通过之前的交易获得了82年选秀的头号选秀权。这个选秀权正来源于湖人和骑士队在79-80赛季的一单交易：当时湖人用Don Ford和一个1980年的轮选秀权（之后骑士挑选了Chad Kinch） 交换了骑士队的 Butch Lee和他们1982年的轮选秀权。当然谁也没有料到这个选秀权在82年会成为头号选秀权，湖人就是用这个选秀权摘取了跳过大学第四年直接进入NBA的沃西. 自从湖人在1960年搬到加州以来， 沃西只是湖人历史上第二个选秀状元， 个就是大名鼎鼎的79年状元魔术师约翰逊。

当沃西刚进入湖人队的时候，当时队中的小前锋Wilkes的表现还是如日方中。他在81-82赛季场均达到21.1分一场（全联盟第16高），而且是队中仅次于魔术师约翰逊和Norm Nixon的第三上场时间最多球员。或许在当时大部分的NBA球队中沃西可以马上打上正选发热发亮，可是在湖人队里他一切都要从头做起。

魔术师在回忆沃西在年时的表现时也认为James的为人处事成熟老练，丝毫不比他优良的身体条件逊色。

尽管如此，沃西的NBA新秀赛季仍然是可圈可点的。他的57.9%命中率在所有新秀中排行，这同时也是湖人队史上的新秀记录。他的场均13.4分和5.2个篮板表现让他入选新秀阵容。他出席了球队77场比赛直到折断了胫骨缺席1983年的季后赛。湖人在83年的总决赛被费城76人4场直落横扫，可是湖人80年代在主场的“表演时刻”才刚刚开始。

84-85赛季，湖人成为了联盟中的霸主。他们以62胜20负的联盟第二战绩仅仅一场屈居波士顿之下。他们有联盟第二猛的火力，全队得分仅次于丹佛掘金。在季后赛上他们所向在总决赛之前仅输三场。最终在总决赛上以4比2战胜波士顿报了往年的一箭之仇获得冠军。

尽管沃西在85-86打出了自己的一季并揭开了他连续七次入选全明星赛的序幕，NBA总冠军在85-86赛季还是重回波士顿怀抱。他的平均得分在常规赛突破了20分大关，也是他职业生涯常规赛场均得分四次突破20分的次。他再次在常规赛取得了骄人的57.2%命中率。在季后赛，他场均19.5分一场，这也是他职业生涯里一次在季后赛场均得分不如常规赛。

之后的两季不但沃西达到了自己职业生涯的顶峰，湖人队也顺理成章成为了80年代的豪强。湖人连续两年取得联盟战绩，分别在86-87年赢得65场和87-88年赢得62场比赛。更重要的是，湖人队分别在87年的总决赛6场打败波士顿和在88年总决赛7场击退新贵底特律活塞，成为近二十年蝉联NBA总冠军的球队。

在88年的季后赛上湖人队也是险象环生，他们前两轮都要打到7场决胜负，分别淘汰犹它爵士队和达拉斯小牛队然后挺进决赛面对底特律活塞队。在24场季后赛里，沃西场均21.1分, 4.4个助攻和5.8个篮板，同时他的投篮命中率也有52.3%。 不得不提的是，在总决赛的第七场里， 沃取36分，16个篮板和10次助攻，以自己职业生涯总决赛帮助湖人以108比105打败活塞在球场捧杯。

沃西也因此成为了当年的总决赛最有价值球员，讽刺的是，他当年甚至连第三阵容都没有入选。

这个冠军也是湖人队80年代天钩-魔术师年代的绝唱。在的总决赛上湖人队被活塞队横扫，之后在90年在西区决赛被凤凰城太阳队淘汰出局，年在总决赛上被芝加哥公牛队以4 比1击败无缘冠军。尽管球队未能再次赢得总冠军，但沃西在球队的贡献有增无减。

有次他在接受<<洛杉矶时代>>采访时说“我还记得我刚进盟时跟着天钩, Jamaal Wilkes,魔术师, Norm Nixon 和Bob McAdoo打球时的情形。现在我也身处和他们当年一样的情况。那些年轻人告诉我他们在上高中的时候如何看着我们在85年击败波士顿赢得总冠军。真是岁月不饶人啊”
